Governor Tate Reeves and MEMA Launch COVID-19 Emergency Relief Program

Governor Tate Reeves and MEMA Launch COVID-19 Emergency Relief Program

Pearl, Miss. (MEMA)–  Governor Tate Reeves and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency are launching the MEMA COVID-19 Emergency Relief Program. Through Mississippi Legislature’s House Bill 1799 and Senate Bill 3047, MEMA was allocated $70,000,000 of CARES Act money to assist counties and municipalities with their COVID-19 expenses.

Through FEMA’s COVID-19 Economic Disaster Declaration, counties and municipalities and specific nonprofits are eligible for public assistance. While FEMA reimburses 75% of those approved expenses, some entities struggle to meet the 25% match. Through the MEMA COVID-19 Emergency Relief Program, the burden is now lifted from the counties and municipalities to provide that match.

Not all COVID-19 expenses are eligible for federal reimbursement through FEMA; therefore SB 3047 details what other expenses can be covered by the CARES Act funds.  The allocation of funds from the Relief Program is based on the county or municipality’s population as listed in the 2010 U.S. Census. If a government entity’s costs are not entirely covered by FEMA’s reimbursement, MEMA will work with remaining CARES Act funds to help ensure a 100% reimbursement.

The CARES Act funding application process will be open from August 3- October 15. Information on how to apply for CARES Act funding will be available by July 31 on MEMA’s website: www.msema.org. According to SB 3047, reimbursements must begin August 15. Monies must be obligated by November 30 or will be returned to the governor.

Counties and municipalities can apply for public assistance through FEMA’s Grants Portal now by visiting https://grantee.fema.gov.

George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today" Hits #1 40 Years Ago Today

Hit Song Preserved by the Library of Congress and added to the National Recording Registry in 2008

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Today marks the 40th Anniversary of Country Music Hall of Fame member George Jones’ iconic song “He Stopped Loving Her Today” reaching #1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Chart on July 5, 1980. This was Jones’ first solo hit in six years and paved the way to winning the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year in 1980 and 1981. Written by Bobby Braddock and Curly Putnum, “He Stopped Loving Her Today” has been preserved by the Library of Congress in the National Recording Registry since 2008. After Jones’ death in 2013, “He Stopped Loving Her Today” entered the Billboard Hot Country Charts once again at #21.

“It’s hard to believe it's been 40 years since George topped the charts with “He Stopped Loving Her Today. It’s amazing to me how many artists and people were affected by George’s music,” says Nancy Jones. “Everyday I hear new stories about George and I love hearing them because I know his legacy continues to live on. I am even more excited to soon announce some things that will keep George’s memory alive forever in our hearts and our lives.”

Jones’ career never left the top of the country charts having recorded more than 100 albums during his career and more than 150 of those songs were hits, including 60 Top 10 singles. His songs including “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” “Tennessee Whiskey,” Still Doin’ Time,” “A Good Year For The Roses,” “She Thinks I Still Care,” and so many more still remain fan favorites today.

Jones was often referred to as ‘The Possum,’ for his facial features and the shape of his nose, or No Show Jones, for his sudden disappearing act before a show. However, when Jones finally did take the stage he was a hardcore honky tonker that sang songs about heartbreak and hard drinking times that echoed his own turbulent life. By most accounts, George Jones was the finest vocalist in the recorded history of country music.
