Shiloh National Military Park

Shiloh National Military Park Celebrates 119th Birthday

On Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, Shiloh National Military Park will commemorate the 119th anniversary of its establishment as a Civil War military park. The program will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the visitor center auditorium with a PowerPoint presentation about the establishment of the park. Following the 30 minute program, the Hardin County Convention & Visitors Bureau will present a cake to the park for visitors to enjoy. This event is free and open to the public.

Shiloh was established on Dec. 27, 1894, during a wave of nationalism and preservation in the United States. By the 1890s, many Americans had grown tired of the sectionalism which tore the country apart in the 1850s and 60s and the Reconstruction period that followed the war. In addition, many civilians and veterans wanted to pay tribute to the bravery of Civil War soldiers, both North and South alike. Shiloh was one of the first five military parks created, along with Chickamauga, Vicksburg, Antietam, and Gettysburg. Since its founding, not only has Shiloh Battlefield preserved the ground of the first major fight of the Civil War, it has also had far reaching effects on the local economy, providing numerous jobs as a mainstay of Hardin County tourism.

The Shiloh National Military Park visitor center is open from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. The park’s bookstore is open from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the winter season. For more information, contact the park visitor center at 731-689-5696, go to the park website at, or find us on Facebook.

Children's Christmas Program

Shiloh Battlefield will be hosting a special Children’s Christmas Program for young children and families on Saturday, December 21. Kids will construct 19th century Christmas ornaments, learn how Christmas was celebrated during the Civil War period, and create Christmas cards for our troops currently deployed overseas through “Operation Christmas Cards.” As a special treat, Santa Claus has confirmed that he will take time from his busy schedule to visit with the children.

The program will begin at 2:00 pm and last about one hour. Anyone interested in joining the park for this special holiday program are encouraged to register in advance by calling the Shiloh visitor center at 731-689-5696 as space is limited.
As a reminder, the Shiloh Battlefield Visitor Center, Shiloh Bookstore, and the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center will be closed Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. These facilities will be open on the day prior to the specific holiday, and the day following the scheduled observance. These three specific days will be the only holiday closure dates.
